Uploading Images in MISTIE III

It's almost time to start screening and enrolling patients in MISTIE III! The Reading Center has put together some instructions for uploading images to the Vision EDC directly from your PACS system. Click "read more" to view the instructions and download the files for a quick reference.

Uploading DICOM images from PACS system to the Vision EDC

Each institution’s PACS is different, but this set of instructions outlines the general steps. Contact the Reading Center at 410-502-2949 or the 24hr study cell phone at 410-736-1368 if you have any questions.

1.Open your PACS and log in.

2.Navigate to the images for the patient that you wish to upload. The Reading Center needs a complete axial view series for volumetric analysis.

3.Export the images to DICOM. Every system will have a different way to do this (export button, right click to export, etc…). Choose a location on your computer that will be easy to navigate to later, for example, a folder on your desktop labeled with the patient ID.

4.Locate the exported DICOM file folder and compress the entire folder to a “zipped” folder.

5.Upload the zipped folder to the Source Docs page for the patient in the Vision EDC by clicking “Choose File” and selecting the zip file you created. Then press “Save” on the floating taskbar in the bottom of the page. Large files may take some time to upload, but eventually the page will refresh and your newly uploaded folder will appear as a hyperlink.

*Uploading multiple zip files to the same slot will not delete the files already there. A +/- option will appear on the slot when multiple files are uploaded.*

Uploading images from PACS system as JPEGs

JPEG images are NOT sufficient as a final image format because they are not calibrated and cannot be used for volumetric measurements. However, they may serve as a surrogate in the event that DICOMs are not available and quick view of the CT is needed. Each institution’s PACS is a little different, but this set of instructions outlines the general steps. Contact the Reading Center at 410-502-2949 or the 24hr study cell phone at 410-736-1368 if you have any questions.

1.Open your PACS and log in.

2.Navigate to the patient’s images.

3.Select the series that you wish to use (the Reading and Surgical Centers need axial views).  Once you have selected the appropriate series, you should be able to toggle the DICOM header information off (i.e. remove patient name, date, etc…). This will make the images anonymous.

4.Most PACS systems will have an option to “Export to JPEG.” You may select this option and choose the destination (a folder on your computer) where you want the JPEG images to be saved.

5.Locate the file folder where you have saved the JPEG images, compress this to a zip folder, and upload the zip folder to the ECD (the same way you would upload a zip folder of DICOMs).

6.If you do not have the capability to “Export to JPEG” you can take a screenshot of your computer screen. Access the image in your PACs system and use the “print screen” option on your computer. For PCs, this is a button on your keyboard (some PCs require holding down the “Alt” button in conjunction with the “Print Screen”). This copies an image of your computer screen to your clipboard, which can then be pasted into a MS Word or PowerPoint document.

For Macs, press command+shift+3. This will take a picture of your screen and save it to your desktop. You will then need to insert it into a MS Word or PowerPoint document. You can do this for multiple consecutive CT slices from the series and the upload the Word or PowerPoint document to the EDC. Label the file with the date and time of the scan(s) it contains.
