Attendees for the Dec-2011 CLEAR III Coordinators' Webinar received a special holiday treat: Gayane Yenokyan from the Hopkins Biostatistics Center presented a preliminary analysis of the MISTIE-II outcomes data. In her information-packed review, Gayane explored the relationships between the various outcomes measures (Modified Rankin, SIS, Barthel, NIHSS) and made some very interesting findings. Also this month, Mark Macek, one of the site managers at the BIOS Coordinating Center, gave us an update on CLEAR-III enrollment and Natalie Ullman offerred to "Lets Make a Deal" with an exciting new way to simplify the enrollment process.
European Stroke OrganisationProfessor Hanley presented the main results of the MISTIE-III trial, an RCT testing minimally invasive catheter evacuation of intracerebral haematoma, aided by local infiltration of alteplase (up to 9 x 1mg doses, 8h apart) with the aim of decreasing clot size to 15 mL or less, against standard medical management. The LancetAcute stroke due to supratentorial intracerebral haemorrhage is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Open craniotomy haematoma evacuation has not been found to have any benefit in large randomised trials. We assessed whether minimally invasive catheter evacuation followed by thrombolysis (MISTIE), with the aim of decreasing clot size to 15 mL or less, would improve functional outcome in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage.
