BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS 2013

A Dedication to Dan Hanley and the CLEAR and MISTIE Project Teams

Composed and sung in Waikiki on 05-February-2013 by Keith Gregson while attending the International Stroke Conference. It is set to an old cajun fiddle tune and dedicated to Dan Hanley and members of the CLEAR and MISTIE teams at JHU, Baltimore, Maryland. Keith is the spouse of Barbara Gregson, who manages the STICH-II trial and is a member of the CLEAR steering committee.

In 2013 we took a little trip to a famous city on the mighty Mississip
To watch Ray Lewis and his Superbowl machine meet the 49ers in the ‘town’ of New Orleans

THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE ‘NINERS KEPT ON COMIN’

BRAVE AND DEADLY AS MANY YEARS AGO
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT BUT THE DEFENSE KEPT IT STEADY
YOU COULD HEAR US ALL A-CHEERING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO

A whistle went and we took them by surprise – Crossed that line right before their very eyes
Then again and again till another whistle came, then we sent them to the locker room to think about the game

THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE ‘NINERS KEPT ON COMIN’
BRAVE AND DEADLY AS MANY YEARS AGO
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT BUT THE DEFENSE KEPT IT STEADY
YOU COULD HEAR US ALL A-CHEERING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO

If you think the break would have gave them time to learn – all they met was a famous punt return
Then the lights went out when we had them in a grip and gave them time to steady up the ship

THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE ‘NINERS KEPT ON COMIN’
BRAVE AND DEADLY AS MANY YEARS AGO
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT BUT THE DEFENSE KEPT IT STEADY
YOU COULD HEAR US ALL A-CHEERING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO

The ‘Niners roared like a lion in a rage – battered us back like a fighter in a cage
But four times famously we held them on the line then we whooped and hollered as we counted down the time

THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE ‘NINERS KEPT ON COMIN’
BRAVE AND DEADLY AS MANY YEARS AGO
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT BUT THE DEFENSE KEPT IT STEADY
YOU COULD HEAR US ALL A-CHEERING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO

SUPERBOWL HEROES - REMEMBER THEM FOREVER
SUPERBOWL HEROES – RECALL THE FAMOUS DAY
WHEN BALTIMORE WENT DOWN LOUISIANA
SWAMPED THE 49ERS ON THE FIELD OF PLAY

Keith, a songwriter and PRS member, says: "I composed this song to what I believe to be a traditional American fiddle tune called ‘The Eighth of January’. I acknowledge that in the 1930s a fellow teacher/songwriter in the USA put words to it to use with children (as I did and still do in my work) and there are references to those words in my song, but it was written for amusement and not for financial gain! For more on my own music" Learn more about Keith at www.keithgregson.com
